VAR gets CAF Nod… will be deployed during SuperCup

Africa will get it’s first official trial of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system during the CAF Super Cup clash this weekend, announced CAF.

The 2018 Super Cup will be contested between CAF Champions League champions Wydad Casablanca and Confederation Cup winner TP Mazembe at the Stade Mohamed V in Casablanca on Saturday.

The recent CHAN tournament produced successful mock-up trials last month, under the supervision of FIFA experts in Morocco.

The International Football Association Board (IFAB) and FIFA have since given the green light for the technology to be used in the one-off competitive clash.

“It is a historic moment for African football. I’m proud that Africa has taken the initiative to embrace latest technology towards the development of football. This is a huge step for African football and I’m positive the impact will be felt at all levels of the game,” CAF General Secretary Amr Fahmy said in a statement.
