Ugandan striker Denis Omedi has expressed confidence in the Cranes’ ability to progress beyond the group stage at the upcoming AFCON, despite not being considered favorites.
Uganda has been drawn into Group C alongside three-time African champions Nigeria, Tunisia, and East African rivals Tanzania.
While many fans and pundits expect Nigeria and Tunisia to secure the top two spots, Omedi insists that his team should not be counted out.
“All things are good at the moment. Some comments said Uganda is already down after the draw but I believe in our country and the players we have,” Omedi said.
The forward emphasized the importance of starting strong, believing that an early victory would build momentum and send a message to their group rivals.
“I strongly believe we can get out of this group, and we will give our best.
The most important thing is how we begin the tournament, starting well gives us confidence and puts other teams on notice.”
Paul Put’s side will kick off their AFCON 2025 campaign against Tunisia on Tuesday, December 23, before facing Tanzania. Their final group-stage match will be against Nigeria on Tuesday, December 30.
This will be Uganda’s eighth AFCON appearance, having previously featured in 1962, 1968, 1974, 1976, 1978, 2017, and 2019.
