Ajax secured their place in the next round after a dramatic penalty shootout victory over Panathinaikos in a tense Europa League encounter on Thursday.

Striker Chuba Akpom featured prominently for Ajax, playing from the start and lasting 68 minutes.

Despite his efforts, including eight attempts on goal, Akpom was unable to find the back of the net, continuing his scoreless run in four appearances for the Dutch side this season.

Panathinaikos secured a 1-0 victory in regular time, leveling the aggregate score at 1-1 and forcing the match into extra time.

Neither side could break the deadlock during the additional 30 minutes, leading to a marathon penalty shootout.
