Udinese Drop Maduka Okoye Amid Alleged Betting Scandal

Serie A club Udinese have excluded Super Eagles goalkeeper Maduka Okoye from their registered squad, following allegations of betting irregularities.

The 25-year-old is under investigation for suspicious betting activities linked to a yellow card he received during Udinese’s 2-1 victory over Lazio on March 11, 2024.

Okoye was booked for time-wasting in the 90th minute, with Italian authorities alleging unusual gambling patterns surrounding the incident.

The investigation intensified after betting agency Sisal flagged the booking, with their algorithm reportedly detecting irregular betting activities. This prompted investigators to raid Okoye’s residence as part of their probe.

If found guilty, the Nigerian international could face a ban of up to five years, potentially derailing his professional career.

Okoye, currently sidelined with a season-ending wrist injury, has been replaced in Udinese’s 25-man Serie A squad by newly signed goalkeeper Egil Selvik. However, the club has not confirmed whether this decision is due to the ongoing allegations or simply a result of Okoye’s injury.

Amid the controversy, Udinese head coach Kosta Runjaic remains focused on maintaining the team’s morale.

“We haven’t talked about it; we’re focused on Como. The atmosphere is still very good; the team spirit is there, and we’re working diligently,” Runjaic stated.

Okoye joined Udinese in 2023 from Watford and has made 37 appearances for the Italian side. As the investigation continues, his future at the club hangs in the balance.
