U17 AFCON: Guinea are a Lucky charm and it could benefit Nigeria’s Eaglets

Nigeria will face perennial underachievers Guinea in the first semi-final of the CAF U17 Africa Cup of Nations at the National Stadium, Dar es Salaam on Wednesday.

Guinea booked their place in the last four of the competition with a 1-0 over Morocco to finish second in group B with 6 points; one behind Cameroon.

By virtue of the progress to the next round, the Young Syli Nationale also confirmed their spot in the World Cup alongside Nigeria, Angola and Cameroon, as Africa’s quartet for the tournament.

However, their performance at both world and local stages have often fallen short; the most recent at the last edition of the AFCON in Gabon.

They have never progressed beyond the semi-final; making it that far on three occasion, but lost on all three to the eventual winners of the competition.

On the other hand, Nigeria have only won the U17 AFCON twice, although the Eaglets have made more appearances – 9 – in the competition than any other team.
