Everton Women handed Manchester City their first loss of the season, defeating the reigning UWCL quarterfinalists 2-1 and leaving their title hopes hanging by a thread at Walton Hall Pack.
Despite a chance to close the gap to WSL leaders Chelsea, Gareth Taylor’s side struggled to find their rhythm, missing key players like Bunny Shaw, Lauren Hemp, and captain Alex Greenwood, who was stretchered off midweek.
With injuries taking a toll, City failed to capitalize on Chelsea’s 1-1 draw with Leicester, falling short in the race for the Women’s Super League title.
Everton, who had never beaten Man City in their previous 16 attempts, were tactical masterminds, soaking up pressure and taking advantage of rare attacking opportunities.
Lucy Hope gave the hosts the lead in the 22nd minute with a header off a cross from Sara Holmgaard.
Just eight minutes later, Honoka Hayashi doubled Everton’s advantage, capitalizing on a cross from Melissa Lawley that deflected past City keeper Khiara Keating.
Man City fought back late in the second half when Yui Hasegawa won a penalty, which was calmly converted by Mary Fowler to make it 2-1.
However, despite continued pressure, Everton’s defense, led by Super Falcons defender Tony Payne, stood strong to secure the historic win.
Payne, a crucial presence throughout, was substituted in the 79th minute.
This victory marks Everton’s first-ever win over Manchester City in 17 attempts, sending a clear message in the WSL title race.
With the Blues now six points behind Chelsea, City’s title hopes hang in the balance.
