It is a huge cash out for Tobi Amusan as her silver medal not only delivered pride for Nigeria but also came with a combined prize money haul of $55,000 (₦82.5m).
Nigeria’s sprint queen, Tobi Amusan, proved once again why she remains one of the world’s best hurdlers after storming to silver in the women’s 100m hurdles final at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.
The 28-year-old clocked 12.29s to finish second behind Switzerland’s Ditaji Kambundji, who stunned the field with a national record of 12.24s to claim gold.
America’s Grace Stark settled for bronze in 12.34s, while compatriot Masai Russell clipped several hurdles to finish fourth in 12.44s.
$55,000 payday for Tobi Amusan
Under World Athletics’ prize structure, silver medallists are awarded $35,000 (₦52.5m), while bronze medallists get $22,000.
In addition, Hiracer, Nigeria’s official kit supplier for Tokyo 2025, pledged podium bonuses to athletes ahead of the championship.
The company confirmed it would pay $20,000 to silver medallists, alongside $30,000 for gold and $10,000 for bronze.
That extra payout brought Amusan’s total earnings in Tokyo to $55,000 (₦82,577,300.85).
AFN President, Tonobok Okowa confirmed the arrangement, saying:
“This company said they would give any gold medallist $30,000, silver medallist $20,000, and bronze medallist $10,000.”“So they should concentrate, work hard and try to win, and then they will win their money.”
Another podium for Nigeria’s finest
Amusan’s performance means Nigeria now has 12 medals in World Championships history. The silver also follows her gold and world record run (12.12s) in Eugene 2022.
Nigerian greatest track athlete looked sharp in the semi-final, winning her heat in 12.36s, and entered the final as one of the big favourites.
Star-studded final
The final was among the most competitive in recent history, with Kambundji announcing herself on the global stage with the race of her life.
