Thomas Partey has declined the opportunity to join Ghana in their upcoming friendly match against Nigeria this Friday.
Despite being named in Ghana’s squad for the fixture, Partey has cited fitness concerns as the primary reason for his withdrawal.
Partey, who is making a slow return from a groin injury sustained in November last year, expressed his reluctance to risk exacerbating his condition by participating in international duties prematurely.
The 30-year-old had surgery following the injury and has faced setbacks in his rehabilitation process, delaying his return to competitive action.
Although Partey recently made a comeback with Arsenal, featuring in their 6-0 victory against Sheffield United in early March, his fitness levels are still a concern.
Ghana’s national team, the Black Stars, is slated to play against both Nigeria and Uganda during this international break, with the matches scheduled to take place in Morocco.
Partey’s past performances for the Black Stars had been significant, including his memorable goal against Nigeria during the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
Despite his absence, Black Stars will be aiming for a good start under new gaffer Oto Addo, after the disappointment at the last Africa Cup of Nations.
