Super Eagles and Bayer Leverkusen forward Nathan Tella couldn’t hide his delight after opening his Bundesliga account in a pulsating 3-2 win over Borussia Dortmund.
Tella wasted no time making an impact, scoring just 25 seconds into the match, one of the fastest goals in the league this season.
Tella, making a rare start for Xabi Alonso’s side, capitalized on a precise assist from Robert Andrich to give Leverkusen an early lead.
The 25-year-old featured prominently for 71 minutes before being replaced by Martin Terrier, playing a key role in his team’s hard-fought victory.
Speaking after the game, Tella expressed his satisfaction with the result, emphasizing that while scoring was nice, securing the win was the most important part.
“Obviously, first game back in the new year, we wanted to start as we mean to go in the duration of the season.
To score is nice, but more importantly, to win is even better.”
When asked if the goal against Nuri Sahin’s Dortmund was the fastest he had ever scored, Tella said,
“I’m not sure. I think I scored on in the first minute as well at Burnley, but this one is even better, so, I’ll remember this one more.”
Tella also praised Dortmund’s quality but highlighted Leverkusen’s determination to stick to their game plan.
“Dortmund are a top-quality team with top-quality individuals and they’re very good, but we knew if we stuck with our game plan and principles. We’ll make it as difficult as we can for them and thankfully, we were able to get the win which is the main thing.”
