The Girls Performed Well – NWFL Head Hails on Edo Queens’ CAF Performance

Mrs. Nkechi Obi, the head of the Nigerian Women’s Football League, expressed her satisfaction with the performance of Edo Queens at the CAF Women’s Champions League, highlighting the team’s achievements and their potential for growth.

In an exclusive interview with Brila.net, Obi spoke on  the importance of the team’s efforts and outlined her vision for the league’s future.
“They (Edo Queens) did what we expected. What I expected to happen happened. They’re a young team, they can build on it,” Obi said.
Obi also noted that other teams in the league would be motivated by Edo Queens’ progress, setting higher expectations for future seasons.
“Other teams will not step up, knowing that this qualification to get to the final, it should be a matter of course for us,” she added.
Despite facing financial challenges that have made securing sponsorships difficult, Obi remained optimistic about the league’s future.
“We’re working hard to see we’re bringing some money. The country is undergoing a real loss,” she explained, acknowledging the economic hurdles facing the sport.
She also highlighted the league’s efforts to increase visibility through television broadcasts, an initiative that she believes will help the league grow and attract more support.
“The only thing that people move from their projects is advertising, sponsorship, all those kind of things. But we’re really working very hard,” Obi said.
“We’re also working very hard to make sure we show our matches on TV. So let’s see how it goes when the new season starts.”
With the new season approaching, Obi is hopeful that the league will continue to grow, fostering young talent and attracting much-needed support for women’s football in Nigeria.
