Former world number one, Venus Williams has turned down a wildcard for next month’s Indian Wells tournament, raising fresh questions about her future in professional tennis.
The 44-year-old, seven-time Grand Slam singles champion had been offered an invite by tournament organizers but chose not to accept it.
“Our team has been informed that Venus is not accepting the wildcard this year,” the event posted on X, quoting tournament director Tommy Haas.
“We wish Venus all the best and hope to see her back in Indian Wells in the future.”
No Plans for a Comeback Yet

Williams, who has dropped to 974th in the WTA rankings, has not played a tour-level match since her first-round exit at the 2023 Miami Open nearly a year ago.
Speaking on the Tennis Weekly podcast, she confirmed she would not be making her return at Indian Wells, which runs from March 2 to 16.
“I’m not playing – I’m going to be overseas. I’m not going to be here,” she stated.
A Complicated History with Indian Wells
Williams’ absence also reignites memories of her 15-year boycott of the tournament following the controversial events of 2001.
That year, she withdrew from a semi-final match against her sister Serena due to injury, leading to accusations of match-fixing.
The following day, during Serena’s final against Kim Clijsters, the Williams family was booed and allegedly subjected to racial abuse.
Serena ended the family’s boycott by returning in 2015, while Venus made her comeback the following year.
