Nigeria’s rising table tennis star, Matthew Kuti is set to make his African Cup debut at the 2025 African Cup, scheduled to take place from February 25 to 27 in Tunisia.
The Nigeria Table Tennis Federation (NTTF) has penned Kuti for the prestigious tournament, where he will compete alongside top African players such as Quadri Aruna (Nigeria), Omar Assar (Egypt), and Dina Meshref (Egypt).
Kuti’s Journey to the African Cup
Since making his senior debut at the 2023 African Games in Accra, Ghana, Kuti has become an integral member of Nigeria’s national team.
He has featured in both the 2024 and 2025 African Championships in Tunis and Addis Ababa, where he won a silver medal with the team.
The fans’ favorite will now travel to Tunisia, where he will compete against a mix of established and emerging talents on the continent.
With only four slots available in the men’s singles category, Kuti will aim to secure a place at the 2025 ITTF World Cup in Macao, China, in April.
Strong Domestic Record
Kuti has been Nigeria’s most consistent table tennis player, having won four of the five major tournaments in the country.
The Lagos State-born athlete recently added the Molade Okoya-Thomas Cup men’s singles title to his growing collection.
He will team up with the Nigerian contingent, coached by legendary Segun Toriola and Dotun Omoniyi, as he seeks to make a mark at the African Cup and qualify for the World Cup.
The top four players in the men’s and women’s singles in Tunisia will secure their tickets to Macao, where they will compete at the 2025 ITTF World Cup in April.
