Jose Mourinho refuses to blame Lindelof for mistake in United’s defeat to Huddersfield
Jose Mourinho has refused to blame Victor Lindelof for his mistake in Manchester United’s 2-1 defeat to Huddersfield Town on Saturday.
United suffered their first loss in the Premier League this season as Aaron Mooy and Laurent Depoitre gave the hosts a first-half lead before Marcus Rashford struck with 12 minutes remaining.
For Depoitre’s goal, Lindelof completely failed to connect with a headed clearance, which allowed the ball to fall into the path of the Huddersfield striker, who raced clean through towards David De Gea.
Lindelof had replaced Phil Jones, who was forced off after just 23 minutes due to injury, but Mourinho says it is unfair to point the finger at the Swede given United’s woeful display as a team.
‘Mistakes, yes,’ the United manager told Sky Sports. ‘But I think mistakes can’t be isolated from the context and the context in the first half was a context that opened the door for mistakes to come.
‘So I would be very unfair if I point the finger at the players involved in individual mistakes that lead to the goal.
‘I could, I should, I would probably if it was isolated from the context of a great team. ‘But it wasn’t, it was exactly the consequence of what we were in the first half – a bad team who deserved to be punished.’
Is Jose Mourinho doing to Victor Lindelof what he did to Henrikh Mkhitaryan ?
Jose Mourinho tends to wear a suit for the first few matches of the season. He did it last season, turning up to Manchester United’s opening fixture against Bournemouth in full formal wear.
Chelsea are battling to keep Nemanja Matic as the Serbian midfielder pushes for move to Manchester United.
Matic came close to leaving Stamford Bridge last summer only for manager Antonio Conte to block his exit.
The defensive midfielder has a strong mentality, which is hugely admired by Mourinho.
And According to ManchesterEveningNews, the 28 year old has reportedly agreed terms with Manchester United, and keen on a reunion with Mourinho after their previous two-year spell together at Stamford Bridge.
Mourinho was the man who brought Matic to the Premier League, after signing him from Benfica in 2014.
The 28-year-old has also seen his two closest friends at the club in Branislav Ivanovic and Asmir Begovic, who have joined Zenit St Petersburg and Bournemouth respectively.
With Matic’s arrival at United seeming imminent, this may end the Red Devils interest in Tottenham star Eric Dier and Chelsea’s target Tiemoue Bakayoko.
With just two weeks to go until Manchester United head off on pre-season tour, only one player has signed for the Red Devils which is Victor Lindelof but time will tell if Matic will be next signing at Old Trafford.
