Super Falcons defender Michelle Alozie is poised for a fresh chapter at Houston Dash as the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) club ushers in a new leadership era under Fabrice Gautrat.
The appointment of Gautrat, a seasoned coach and former player, follows the tumultuous departure of Fran Alonso earlier this year.
Gautrat, who brings a wealth of experience from his stints as an assistant coach with the Chicago Red Stars and North Carolina Courage, steps into the role at a critical juncture for the Dash.
The club endured a challenging 2024 season, finishing at the bottom of the standings with just five wins from 26 games.
Despite the team’s struggles, Alozie remained a consistent presence, making 24 appearances and registering one assist.
The coaching transition comes after months of uncertainty.
Fran Alonso, who had been on personal leave since June 28, officially parted ways with the club on October 1.
Initially cited as an “illness” and later described as a “leave of absence,” Alonso’s departure was ultimately clarified when he took charge of Deportivo La Coruña in November.
While maintaining that his exit from Houston Dash was “amicable,” Alonso disclosed that a confidentiality agreement prevented him from divulging further details.
Ricky Clarke served as interim head coach during Alonso’s absence, but the club has now secured a permanent leader in Gautrat.
Married to two-time FIFA Women’s World Cup champion Morgan Gautrat (née Brian), Gautrat brings both tactical acumen and familiarity with championship-winning environments.
Morgan, a pivotal figure in the USWNT’s 2015 and 2019 triumphs, recently led Orlando Pride to clinch the 2024 NWSL Shield and Championship.
Gautrat’s appointment signals a new dawn for the Dash, who will look to rebuild and compete strongly in the upcoming 2025 season.
For Michelle Alozie, who has become a mainstay in Houston’s defense and a fan favorite for her performances with Nigeria’s Super Falcons, the new coaching regime presents an opportunity to elevate her game further.
