Super Falcons, led by Rasheedat Ajibade, secured a resounding 5-0 victory over Cape Verde in the first leg of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifier on Thursday.
Uchenna Kanu and Esther Okoronwko got a brace each, while Gift Monday contributed a goal to the impressive win.
The Falcons’ dominance positions them favorably for a spot in the 2024 WAFCON finals, hosted by Morocco.
However, with the second leg coming up next week, Ajibade emphasized the importance of maintaining focus, stating that the team must continue working hard and not underestimate their opponents.
“Like the coach said, it is still a work in progress, and we just have to build on this place where we stopped today.“
“It is not the best game; we could be better because we set a standard for ourselves, so we just have to keep building up on this standard,” the Atletico Madrid star told reporters.
With a substantial lead, Cape Verde faces the daunting task ofscoring six goals without conceding in the reverse fixture to thwartthe Super Falcons’ journey to the WAFCON finals.
The second leg is slated for the Estadio Nacional de Cabo Verde, Praia next Tuesday.
