Super Falcons: Okon Makes Case for Local Coach

Former Super Falcons head coach, Edwin Okon has identified the Full back positions as the weak areas in the current squad, and advocates for an indigenous coach for the team.

Okon stressed that the opponents at the just concluded Olympics tournament exploited those areas and punished the team.

Nigeria lost all three of its group stage matches to crash out early, and conceded five goals including a 3-1 thumping at the hands of Japan.

Speaking further on the team’s ill-fated campaign in the Summer Games, the former Super Falcons coach also suggested that more players from the NWFL should be called up to create a competitive team.

‘There are players in our local league who can solve those problems we noticed in the Super Falcons team at the Olympic Games, but we do not not have faith in them,” he told Brila.net.

With the future of Randy Waldrum now in question, Okon has also suggested that the NFF jettison the idea of appointing expatriates for the national teams.

“When you bring foreign coaches to handle our national teams, the main concern you’d have is their commitment,” the former Coach argued.

“They are not in tune with our culture and ways and so it’s almost impossible to expect them to have the level of commitment required to build a National team. We see them return to their Countries after every tournament, rather than stay back to plan.”
