Super Falcons forward and WAFCON winning player, Ifeoma Onumonu has announced her retirement from professional football at the age of 31, drawing the curtain on a remarkable playing journey that spanned over two decades.
The Nigerian international made the announcement on Saturday through a heartfelt Instagram post, reflecting on her passion-filled journey from childhood to the global stage.
“It is with a heart full of gratitude that I bid farewell to my playing career on the pitch,” Onumonu wrote.
Humble Beginnings in California – Ifeoma Onumonu
Born in California, USA to Nigerian parents, Onumonu’s love affair with football began at the age of eight when she joined a youth team named Magic.
“All I wanted to do was run as fast as I could and score. I didn’t much care about winning or losing; I just loved playing,” she recalled.
Her enthusiasm and natural talent quickly set her apart, laying the foundation for a professional career that would take her across two continents.

Despite her retirement from playing, Onumonu clarified that her journey in football is far from over.
“This is not a goodbye to football, but a new beginning. I am excited to explore opportunities off the pitch, using the skills and lessons learned from my time on it,” she stated.
