Super Eagles Watch: Ekong Misses Super Sunday, Onuachu Unstoppable, Boniface Celebrates 50

Super Eagles players had a mixed weekend across Europe’s top leagues, from Italy to England, and even Turkey where they all represented their clubs.

We start from the Serie A where Victor Osimhen’s Napoli suffered a 2-0 loss to Bologna.

The Nigerian forward earned a penalty but Matteo Politano’s shot was saved by Federico Ravaglia to help the visitors to a rare victory.

Napoli now sits 8th in the table with two matches remaining.

Meanwhile, Samuel Chukwueze played 45 minutes for AC Milan in their 5-1 victory over Cagliari, with the club now guaranteed a second-place finish in the league.

Moving on to the English Premier League, Alex Iwobi and Calvin Bassey featured in Fulham’s 4-0 loss to defending champions Manchester City.

Despite the defeat, the duo put in decent performances and played the entire duration.

In another Premier League encounter, Ola Aina and Taiwo Awoniyi suffered defeat at the City Ground when Nottingham Forest hosted Chelsea.

Nottingham twice took the lead until the 80th minute when Raheem Sterling leveled and two minutes later Nicolas Jackson completed the comeback.

Despite the defeat, Nottingham Forest are still a place above relegation and could secure the PL spot on the final day.

With the EFL Championship playoff underway, Joe Aribo put in a good midfield performance for Southampton as they settled for a goalless draw in the first leg of their semi-final tie against Semi Ajayi’s West Bromwich Albion.

In the German Bundesliga, Victor Boniface scored from the spot for Bayer Leverkusen in their 5-0 win over VfL Bochum, extending their unbeaten run to 50 games.

Nathan Tella won the penalty for the Champions after Keven Schlotterbeck snagged the heels of the Nigerian inside the box.

While in the Turkish top flight, Paul Onuachu scored twice for Trabzonspor in a comfortable home victory over Istanbulspor.

Onuachu has been in great form this season, with 14 goals and 4 assists in 20 league appearances.

Finally to Greece where Super Eagles captain William Troost Ekong is back in training and may be called up for next month’s crucial 2026 World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin.

PAOK shared images of the Nigerian CB in training alongside teammates, but he was not in the squad that face Olympiacos in the Super League playoff on Sunday.
