Benin beat group leaders Rwanda to move into second place
Rwanda lost their first game in the WCQ
Nigeria and South Africa are now third and fourth in the standings
The Super Eagles are facing immense pressure to secure a win against South Africa following Benin Republic’s surprising 1-0 victory over Group leaders Rwanda.
On Thursday, led by coach Gernot Rohr, Benin Republic triumphed at the Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny with a first-half goal from Dodo Dokou.
This result caused Nigeria to drop from third to fourth place in Group C of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
Benin Republic’s victory propelled them to second place in the group, tying with Rwanda at four points.
Consequently, Nigeria must win their upcoming match against South Africa in Uyo today to climb back up the standings.
A victory against Bafana Bafana would place Nigeria at the top of the table with five points, one point ahead of Rwanda.
Following this critical match, the Super Eagles will face another challenging game against Benin Republic in Abidjan on Monday, while South Africa will play Zimbabwe.
