Super Eagles footballers delivered elite performances across several European leagues over the weekend, producing goals, assists, and influential displays for their clubs.
From Italy’s dramatic comeback victories to crucial goals in Spain and Russia, the latest round of fixtures saw Nigerian internationals and rising talents play pivotal roles for their respective teams.
Here is a comprehensive breakdown of how Nigerian players fared across Europe.
FA Cup Heartbreak for Iwobi, Bassey and Chukwueze
Super Eagles trio Alex Iwobi, Calvin Bassey and Samuel Chukwueze saw their hopes of lifting the FA Cup come to a disappointing end after Fulham F.C. suffered a shock Round-of-16 elimination.
The Premier League side fell to a narrow 1-0 defeat Championship side, Southampton F.C. at Craven Cottage.
Fulham believed they had opened the scoring in the first half when Rodrigo Muniz finished after a strange sequence involving goalkeeper Daniel Peretz.
However, referee Jarred Gillett had already blown his whistle for an alleged moving ball during the goal-kick, meaning VAR could not intervene.
Southampton eventually found the breakthrough late in the match. Midfielder Finn Azaz first struck the crossbar before winning a penalty following contact from Joachim Andersen.
Striker Ross Stewart calmly converted the spot-kick in stoppage time to send Southampton into the quarter-finals.
Speaking after the match, Fulham manager, Marco Silva admitted the defeat was deeply frustrating.
“Completely disappointing result and afternoon for us, for the football club and for the fans mainly.”
“[They] are going to be the ones that are going to suffer because the expectations, as always, were very high.
“Basically, a really, really bad day for us that has to make us look inside of ourselves and move on.”
Iwobi remains the only one among the Nigerian trio to have previously lifted the FA Cup, having won the trophy with Arsenal F.C. in 2017.
With the cup campaign now over, Fulham shift their focus back to the Premier League where they sit 10th with nine matches remaining.
Gift Orban Inspires Verona Comeback Victory
Nigeria striker, Gift Orban played a crucial role as Hellas Verona F.C. secured a 2-1 away victory over Bologna F.C. 1909.
Orban provided the assist for Verona’s decisive goal when his low cross found Kieron Bowie, who finished calmly to complete the comeback.
The Nigerian forward had returned to action after serving a suspension that kept him out of three matches.
He finished the game with five shots, two on target, three key passes and two big chances created.
Defensively, Nigerian right-back Daniel Oyegoke also impressed in only his ninth league appearance since joining Verona from Heart of Midlothian F.C..
The victory ended Verona’s 12-match winless run and provided a significant boost in their fight against relegation.
Akor Adams Ends Goal Drought for Sevilla
Nigeria prolific striker, Akor Adams returned to scoring form as Sevilla FC played out a 1-1 draw with Rayo Vallecano in La Liga.
Adams opened the scoring after Sevilla launched a quick counter-attack.
Former Chelsea defender, César Azpilicueta delivered a cross into the box which Adams tapped home for his seventh league goal of the season.
The strike also ended a five-match scoring drought and marked his fourth goal in eight matches since returning from international duty.
Sevilla dominated large parts of the match, but Rayo Vallecano responded early in the second half when Fran Pérez won a free kick near the edge of the box, which was curled brilliantly into the top corner.
Adams was substituted in the 67th minute after producing an active attacking display that included four shots, one on target and several progressive runs.
Fellow Nigerian winger Chidera Ejuke came on as a late substitute but could not influence the result.
The draw leaves Sevilla 13th in the La Liga standings, six points above the relegation zone.
Onyedika Recovers After Costly Error in Belgium
Super Eagles midfielder, Raphael Onyedika was in afternoon action for Club Brugge KV during their high-scoring clash with R.S.C. Anderlecht.
The defensive midfielder was caught in possession early in the match, allowing Nathan De Cat to capitalise and give Anderlecht the lead.
However, Onyedika recovered strongly, stabilising Brugge’s midfield and producing a crucial clearance after goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel parried an initial effort.
His overall performance in the 89 minutes he played was statistically impressive.
Olawoyin and Rasheed Akanbi Rocks Turkey
Midfielder Ibrahim Olawoyin delivered an influential performance as Çaykur Rizespor defeated Antalyaspor 1-0.
The match’s only goal came in the 10th minute when Qazim Laçi converted from the penalty spot.
The victory extended Rizespor’s winning run to three matches.
Forward Rasheed Akanbi produced a creative performance for Boluspor in their victory over Iğdır FK.
