Nigeria secured a 2-1 victory over Ghana on Wednesday night in the second semifinal of the 2025 Unity Cup, held at the Gtech Community Stadium in London.
Cyriel Dessers opened the scoring in the 14th minute with a sharp, composed finish after being picked out by a low cross from NPFL player Sodiq Ismail.
The goal marked Dessers’ return to the scoresheet for the national team and set the tone for a confident Nigerian start.
Nigeria doubled their lead just five minutes later when Ghana’s Razak Simpson, under pressure from Semi Ajayi, turned the ball into his own net while attempting to clear.
The own goal gave the Super Eagles a 2–0 cushion and sent the Nigerian fans into a frenzy.
The Black Stars struggled to find their rhythm in the first half, failing to register a single shot on target before the break.
Nigeria, on the other hand, looked more cohesive and energetic, controlling the midfield and creating several promising chances.
In the second half, Ghana regrouped and began to mount pressure. Their efforts were rewarded in the 70th minute when Thomas Asante capitalized on a defensive lapse to reduce the deficit and give Ghana hope of a comeback.
However, despite Ghana’s growing momentum, the Super Eagles held their ground.
Nigeria’s backline, led by stand-in Semi Ajayi, remained composed and organized to repel Ghana’s late attacks and preserve their slim advantage until the final whistle.
With the win, Nigeria advances to the Unity Cup final where they will face Jamaica, who edged Trinidad and Tobago 3-2 in the other semifinal.
The final is scheduled for Saturday, May 31, also at the Gtech Community Stadium.
Meanwhile, Ghana will take on Trinidad and Tobago in the third-place playoff as they aim to salvage some pride from the tournament.
