The Super Eagles have secured their place in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, in Morocco with a game to spare, thanks to a surprising turn of events in Group D.

Rwanda’s 1-0 home defeat to Libya at the Amahoro Stadium in Kigali sealed Nigeria’s qualification even before their clash against Benin in Abidjan.

The decisive moment came late in the second half when Libya’s Fahd Saad Mohamed, brought on as a substitute, struck the winning goal in the 84th minute.

This upset leaves Rwanda with just five points from five games, mathematically unable to overtake the Super Eagles, who are already guaranteed a top-two finish.

While Rwanda can no longer qualify over Nigeria, they remain in the hunt for the group’s second qualifying spot, battling with Benin, who hold 7 points.

Libya, currently at the bottom with four points, also have a slim chance of impacting the group standings as they face Benin in the final matchday.

Meanwhile, Nigeria came from behind to earn a point against Benin. Though the Super Eagles’ place in Morocco is secure, the remaining fixtures will determine which other team joins them from Group D.

At present, Nigeria leads with 11 points, followed by Benin with 7 Rwanda with five, and Libya with four.

As the group narrows, all eyes will be on the upcoming fixtures, as Benin, Rwanda, and Libya push for the remaining AFCON qualification spot.
