Former Nigerian international, Peter Rufai has given his thoughts on the coaching situation of the Super Eagles.
Jose Peseiro’s contract expired at the end of the February and it is reported that negotiations over a new deal isn’t yielding much positive signs.
Speaking with BRL, Rufai said local coaches should be given a chance. He made a reference to the last AFCON and said that a lot of nations came with local coaches and it worked for them.
The former Super Eagles goalkeeper also said it is an avenue for development of the local tacticians.
“At this point, let them give some of the local coaches a chance. Look at the AFCON, most of the nations came with their local coaches.
“They came with their local coaches and they have also expatriates assisting their local coaches. So let us have our local coaches, let us have expatriates assisting them.”
“Yes, they also have expatriates as assistant coaches; a team of experts who read the game and then pass messages to the coach. We have this kind of set up. Experts who are so good in physical training, people who will be training the players on physical fitness.
“Then we have another set who will be reading the games. Now we have a local coach, an ex-international or a local one, then get them there and then blend these things together. There are many ways to achieve it.”
“I’m talking about development. I’m talking about development also in the industry. A way that our local coaches too will be developed. A way that we will have the expatriate alongside, working with our local coaches and helping them to grow.”
