Former Nigeria Men’s U20 NT head coach, Fatai Amoo has identified the midfield of the Super Eagles as the department needing urgent treatment.
The Super Eagles lack a creative player who can compliment the team’s retinue of attackers – who oft underperform.
On Friday, Victor Boniface and Taiwo Awoniyi were given opportunities to lead Nigeria’s attack in the AFCON 2025 qualifying match against Libya.
Boniface was handed a starter’s spot, earning his seventh cap, but the forward still has only one international goal, and has been criticized for National team form.
Meanwhile, Awoniyi who came off the bench (76′) had less han three touches in a game which Nigeria dominated possession for large spells including the final sixteen minutes.
The midfield and its lack of creativity made the game bland for both Forwards, Amoo opined speaking with Brila.net in his review of the team’s performance.
“Our defence has some stability, but our biggest problem is the midfield in terms of creativity,” Amoo said.
“People will keep asking for another Jay-Jay Okocha because that’s what we miss now.”
“We might need a Cole Palmer, Jude Bellingham or Martin Ødegaard type of player to solve our midfield problem.”
He went further to state that, “When you have players who can destroy defenders with dribbling abilities, the likes of Ejuke (Chidera) if you could get them in other positions it will improve the team.
“Boniface who couldn’t operate yesterday how many opportunities was created for him? How many through passes were played in his path?
“But we saw the changes the coach made and how it worked. Yet we need to look internally to the League for answers to this problem.”
