Jacob Murphy was the star of the night as Newcastle secured a crucial victory over Arsenal, with the winger opening the scoring in the 19th minute.
His composed low finish, following a clever pass into the box, gave the Magpies an early lead and put Arsenal on the back foot.
Newcastle almost had a dream start at St. James’ Park when Alexander Isak found the net with a clinical finish. However, the goal was ruled out for offside following a VAR review, bringing the home crowd back down to earth.
Fifteen minutes later, Murphy ensured Newcastle got their breakthrough with a goal that did count.
Nwaneri’s Impact on Arsenal
While Murphy stole the spotlight, 17-year-old Ethan Nwaneri, another player of Nigerian descent, made an important contribution to Arsenal.
The teenager was introduced in the 37th minute after Gabriel Martinelli suffered an injury.
Nwaneri brought fresh energy to Arsenal’s attack and came close to scoring in the 75th minute, but his rebound effort was saved by Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka.
Newcastle doubled their lead in the 52nd minute when Anthony Gordon capitalized on a defensive mistake from David Raya, sealing a 2-0 win.
The Magpies will now face either Liverpool or Tottenham Hotspur in the Carabao Cup final on Sunday, March 16, at Wembley.
Murphy’s Evolution at Newcastle
Since returning from multiple loan spells in the 2020-21 season, Murphy has primarily played a squad role.
His appearances increased over the years, but his playing time remained limited. Injuries hampered his 2023-24 campaign, yet he still managed 28 appearances across all competitions, contributing three goals and eight assists.
This season, Murphy has stepped up massively. His goal against Arsenal was his fifth of the season, marking his best single-campaign return for Newcastle. Despite not being a prolific goalscorer, three of his four domestic cup goals have now come in the Carabao Cup.
Could Murphy Play for Nigeria?
Born to an Irish mother and a Nigerian father, Murphy is eligible to represent Nigeria, England, and Ireland. He last played international football for England’s Under-21s in 2017, but Nigeria has yet to approach him for a potential switch.
The Super Eagles boast a talented squad, but Murphy’s pace, skill, and experience could be a valuable addition to the team’s attack. With his current form, should Nigeria make a move for him?
