Former Super Falcons player, Stella Mbachu has called on the Nigerian Football Federation to hire a local coach for the team following Randy Waldrum’s resignation.
In an interview with Brila.net, Mbachu explained that Nigerian coaches have proven themselves capable, achieving similar successes to foreign coaches.
She emphasized the need for an enabling environment and long-term support for homegrown coaches rather than short-term contracts that lead to frequent coaching changes.
“In my opinion, hiring an indigenous coach is very good. I prefer the indigenous coach, because I don’t see what the foreigners have done that the indigenous coaches have not done. I don’t see anything different.”
She highlighted that Nigerian coaches like Eucharia Uche and Florence Omagbemi have also led the Falcons to glory, including winning the Africa Women Cup of Nations.
“They also did their best. They did very well when they were there, so there’s nothing special about these foreign coaches.”
Mbachu continued, stressing the importance of giving local coaches a fair chance.
“My opinion is, they should just allow the home-based coach to come and take over, and give them free hands to work. Not this, come and handle for six months, two, three months, then they remove you. It doesn’t work that way.”
Mbachu believes that a Nigerian coach, with proper support, can lead the Super Falcons to further success on the global stage.
