Stanley Nwabali, the Super Eagles goalkeeper, has been struck by another tragedy, losing his mother just weeks after his father’s passing.
The 28-year-old took to social media on Wednesday to share the heartbreaking news.
“RIP mom, worst year of my life already,” Nwabali wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
Before announcing the death of his mom, Nwabali had posted: “A very very crazy world indeed.”
This devastating loss comes barely a month after Nwabali’s father passed away during the international break in November.
The tragedy unfolded just hours before Nigeria’s 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON qualification match against Rwanda. Despite the circumstances, Nwabali played in the first game against Benin but was excused from camp afterwards to mourn his father.
The Super Eagles went on to lose the game against Rwanda 2-1, highlighting a challenging period for both the team and Nwabali personally.
Adding to the heartbreak, Nwabali’s mother’s death occurred just hours after he posted a video on social media reflecting on his achievements in 2023.
It had been a remarkable year for the goalkeeper, who won silver with the Super Eagles at the AFCON tournament held in Côte d’Ivoire and played a key role in securing Nigeria’s qualification for AFCON 2025 with a game to spare.
Nwabali also enjoyed a stellar season with his South African club, further cementing his reputation as a dependable presence between the posts.
This dual loss marks a painful chapter in Nwabali’s life, and he continues to receive support from fans and teammates as he navigates this challenging time.
