Southampton Boss Russell Martin Offers Onuachu Lifeline

Southampton manager Russell Martin has expressed his willingness to give Nigerian striker Paul Onuachu another opportunity at the club, despite ongoing rumors about the player’s future.
Onuachu remains with the Saints after a proposed permanent transfer to Turkish side Trabzonspor collapsed due to disagreements over his valuation.
Southampton originally signed Onuachu from Belgian club Genk in a deal worth around €18 million during the January transfer window of the 2022/23 season.
The 30-year-old striker struggled to make an impact in England, failing to score in 12 appearances for Southampton, which led to a season-long loan move to Trabzonspor.
During his time in Turkey, Onuachu rediscovered his form, scoring 17 goals and providing four assists in 25 matches, sparking Trabzonspor’s interest in keeping him permanently.
As his future remains uncertain, Onuachu has joined Southampton’s pre-season training and even featured in their recent friendly against Getafe.
Speaking to the Daily Echo, Martin praised Onuachu’s improved confidence and work ethic.
“I just think he’s different from what we have. He’s trained really, really well,” Martin said. “He’s a different Paul to the one I came across last season in terms of confidence.”
Onuachu made a brief appearance in Southampton’s goalless draw with Getafe, coming on as a substitute in the 72nd minute.
Reflecting on Onuachu’s progress, Martin noted, “This summer he’s a different beast, and whilst he’s here, same as Kyle Walker-Peters, we will try and utilize him.”
Onuachu could be play a part in Southampton’s league opener against Newcastle United on Saturday, August 17.
