Former Bafana Bafana and Everton midfielder, Steven Pienaar announced his retirement from football on Wednesday, bringing down the curtain on his nearly two decades career.
The former Evertonian played alongside Nigeria’s Joseph Yobo, Yakubu Aiyegbeni and with Victor Anichebe at both the Goodison park and Sunderland.
Pienaar retired from international football in 2012 but continued at club level for another six seasons.
He called time on his playing career back in his native South Africa after a stint with PSL club, Bidvest Wits.
In a twitter video posted on Wednesday night, the 35-year-old South African thanked his family and “all the clubs that I have played for, and the supporters of course; how can I forget you guys, thanks for the love throughout my career…”
It’s been an amazing ride made more special by you, the fans. Thank You. It’s been an honour. 🙏🏽⚽️ pic.twitter.com/qsy4bZCLjT
