Tragedy struck the football community as 24-year-old Kaizer Chiefs defender Luke Fleurs was fatally shot in a botched car hijacking in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The incident occurred in the Florida region of Gauteng, approximately ten miles west of Johannesburg, on Wednesday evening.

According to reports, Fleurs was allegedly shot during the attempted car hijacking. South African Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo confirmed that authorities are awaiting further details on the incident.

Family members of Fleurs have reportedly confirmed the devastating news, although Kaizer Chiefs is yet to issue a public statement regarding the incident.

Fleurs, a talented centre-back, joined Kaizer Chiefs from SuperSport United on a two-year contract in October 2023.

Despite his promising career trajectory, Fleurs tragically did not make his debut for Kaizer Chiefs, having only made the bench once for the club.

The Cape Town-born footballer, hailed as one of South Africa’s brightest defensive talents, represented his country at the Under-17 and U23 levels.

He also participated in the delayed Tokyo Olympics in 2021, showcasing his skills on the international stage.
