Kelechi Iheanacho’s time at Sevilla has been anything but smooth, as the Nigerian forward continues to search for form and consistency in La Liga.
Reports from Spain suggest Sevilla are considering parting ways with Iheanacho in the January transfer window, provided they can find a suitor willing to take on his substantial wages.
Iheanacho joined Sevilla in July on a free transfer after ending a decade-long stint in England. However, his time in Andalusia has been far from fruitful.
The 27-year-old has failed to score in seven La Liga appearances for manager Diego López’s side, with his only goals coming in the Copa del Rey against lower-league Las Rozas on October 30.
His compatriot Chidera Ejuke, who also signed for Sevilla during the summer, had a bright start before being sidelined by injury. In contrast, Iheanacho has struggled to meet expectations, contributing to Sevilla’s underwhelming attack, which has managed just 13 goals in 14 league matches.
The club’s hierarchy is reportedly dissatisfied with his performances and has been linked with Gremio striker Martin Braithwaite as a potential replacement.
A January departure for Iheanacho seems increasingly likely, though his high wages and poor form could make finding a buyer challenging.
A loan move, possibly to a Premier League or Championship side where Iheanacho still has some reputation, appears to be the most practical solution.
Adding to his woes, Iheanacho faced criticism from Nigerian fans following lackluster displays during the recent international break, where the Super Eagles were held to a draw by Benin and suffered a shock defeat to Rwanda.
With time running out to salvage his Sevilla stint, January could mark yet another turning point in Iheanacho’s career as he seeks to reignite his form and confidence.
