Sevilla head coach García Pimienta has voiced his confusion over Kelechi Iheanacho’s underwhelming performances since joining the club, despite the Nigerian forward showing flashes of brilliance in training.
Iheanacho arrived at Sevilla last summer on a free transfer following the expiration of his contract with Leicester City.
Expectations were high for the 28-year-old, given his Premier League experience and pedigree. However, his impact at the club has been limited.
The Super Eagles striker has managed just three goals in 11 appearances across all competitions this season, all of which came in Copa del Rey fixtures.
His struggles in La Liga have raised questions about his fit within the team.
In an interview with AS, Pimienta shared his thoughts on Iheanacho’s situation.
“I don’t know the reason, but there are players who fit in better in one environment than in another.
For whatever reason, Iheanacho hasn’t performed here at the level we all expect, including him.
With his CV there are some things that can’t be explained. Watching him train, you say, ‘this kid has plenty of quality,’” he remarked.
Pimienta dismissed rumours that Iheanacho’s form might be related to fitness issues. “Overweight? He’s not. We’re strict about that. After the injury, I don’t know, but before Christmas, he was at his weight,” the coach clarified.
Despite his struggles at Sevilla, Iheanacho has attracted interest from several English clubs. Premier League sides Ipswich Town and Wolverhampton Wanderers, as well as Championship outfit Leeds United, are reportedly monitoring his situation ahead of a potential January move.
Iheanacho is contracted to Sevilla until June 2026, with the club holding an option to extend his deal by an additional year. However, with limited game time and persistent speculation about a return to England, his future at the club remains uncertain.
