Benin Republic’s Captain Stephane Sessegnon became the first player from the Beninouse player to score against Nigeria at home since 1965.
The former West Bromich Albion and Sunderland midfielder opened the scoring in Wednesday’s encounter at the Goodwill Akpabio stadium, Uyo just after two minutes.
The strike is also Sessegnon’s 24th in 81 appearances for the Squirrels, since making his his debut in 2004.
However, in-form Lille striker Victor Osimhen levelled for the hosts from the spot shortly before the break, before Samuel Kalu scored the winner in the 63rd minute.
Although Sessegnon’s goal wasn’t enough to get his a point against Nigeria, but they will be satisfied with their performance and the result.
The Michel Dussuyer’s side will take on Sierra Leone in their second Group L game at Stade Charles De Gaulle Stadium on Sunday.
