American Serena Williams cruised into the second round of the 2019 U.S. Open after a dominant performance against Maria Sharapova on Monday at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.
Williams advanced to the next round with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Sharapova. It marked her 19th consecutive win over Sharapova as she took a 20-2 all-time lead in their rivalry.
Serena, the tournament’s No. 8 seed, jumped in front by winning the final five games of the opening set, then the first two of the second. Sharapova hasn’t defeated Williams since securing a pair of wins in 2004.
In the men’s draw, defending champion Novak Djokovic advanced to the second round after defeating Spain’s Roberto Carballes Baena in straight sets.
