Former Nigeria international Sam Sodje has weighed in on the current situation surrounding Super Eagles head coach, Finidi George, suggesting that a change in leadership might be necessary to ensure Nigeria’s qualification for the next World Cup.
Sodje’s comments come amidst growing concerns over the team’s performance under Finidi’s management.
In a chat with Brila.net, the former Defender acknowledged that while the Coach may not take full responsibility, but emphasized the importance of results in football.
“The NFF has to sort themselves out. If you sack him, what are you expecting to get?,” Sodje stated.
“Well, yes. Coaches are being judged for results. He has not got his results right now. Our aim is to qualify for the World Cup. If we keep on going the way we’re going, we won’t qualify.”
He stressed that the decision to potentially sack Finidi should be based on the broader objective of securing a spot in the World Cup.
“So it’s not about Finidi George, it’s about what we want. So yes, sacking him might not be the worst idea, because we need to be in the World Cup.”
Sodje, while respecting his compatriot’s legacy as a player, expressed concerns about his capabilities as a coach.
“I’m not talking about Finidi George, the legend. I’m talking about the coach, he’s not good enough. He’s a legend as a player, as a manager when he was given the job.
“I wanted a home-based coach, but when I heard him talk about football, when I heard him talk about you don’t need system, philosophy, that really got me bad and that’s why I think he’s not the right guy because of his mentality of the way he sees the game and they are shown from his game as well.”
