Rohr set for crunch talk with Mikel ahead 2019 AFCON

Super Eagles technical adviser Gernot Rohr says he will meet with midfielder John Mikel Obi to decide if he’s ready to make a return to the National team for the 2019 African Cup of Nations in Egypt.

The German tactician disclosed that the Middlesbrough skipper is still part of his plan and will set up a meeting with him on his return to the fold.

The former Chelsea midfielder has been away from the National team since 2018 Russia World Cup, where the team failed to advance to the round of 16, after suffering a 2-1 defeat to Lionel Messi led Argentina.

“This is the question that I and my team will resolve. I will soon go to see him at @Boro. There are many things to consider but I respect him and what he has done for Nigeria. He remains an important player,”

Mikel didn’t appear in any of Nigeria’s six 2019 African Cup of Nations qualifiers, which led to the speculations that he might have decided to move on from the National team.

“He has been away from the team for a year but we qualified for the AFCON without him. His absence, as our captain, has been evident. But he has had to deal with a range of issues, after the World Cup in Russia.” Rohr concluded.
