Former Super Eagles head coach, Gernot Rohr, has extended his best wishes to Eric Chelle, the new Super Eagles coach, expressing hope that Chelle will succeed and achieve positive results with the team.
Rohr, who will face Chelle later this year in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, revealed that he has followed the career of the Malian tactician from his days as a player and remains optimistic about his potential.
In an interview with Brila.net, Rohr shared his thoughts on Chelle’s appointment, saying:
“I wish all the best to the Super Eagles and Eric Chelle. I knew him; he was a good player.
Then he started to coach in France with a mid-table team, and later he had the chance to manage Mali, a very good team.
The experience will come, and I hope he will give confidence to the players but not against Benin.”
Rohr, who managed the Super Eagles from 2016 to 2021, led the team to two Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON tournaments and the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
The German tactician also took the opportunity to send warm wishes to his former players and employers, stating he cherishes his time in Nigeria.
Nigeria currently sits fifth in their 2026 World Cup qualifying group and is winless after four matches. To stand any chance of qualification, the Super Eagles will need to win all their remaining games and depend on favorable results from other fixtures.
As both teams prepare for the decisive qualifiers, the Super Eagles under Chelle will aim to turn their fortunes around, while Rohr’s Benin Republic will be looking to make their own mark in the group.
