Gernot Rohr has praised goalkeeper Maduka Okoye after his impressive performance against Sierra Leone in the second-leg AFCON qualifying match on Tuesday.
Okoye was widely criticised following the first-leg 4-4 result in Benin City and many fans called for his exclusion from the team.
Rohr however kept faith with the 21-year-old for the return-leg in Freetown and he produced a fantastic save to deny the home side in the first half of the game.
“The Team did well especially our goalkeeper he had a very good match. Last time he conceded four goals which was not his fault and today he showed everyone what he can do,” the Coach said.
The Franco-German tactician also lauded his defenders for standing firm through the game, but lamented the state of the pitch in Freetown.
“Our defence did well but the pitch is very difficult to play good football and they were playing long balls.”
Meanwhile the Super Eagles remain top of Group L on eight points with two matches left to play.
