Rivers United trashed Lobi Stars 3-1 in one of NPFL week 37th fixtures played at The Adokie Amasiemeka Stadium on Monday.Â
Rivers United got the breakthrough five minutes after the kick off when Morice Chukwu poke home the opener.
The midfielder fired in a low to free kick as Lobi Stars Goalkeeper Aliko Mustapha watched the ball helplessly in to the net to the amazement of all.
Lobi Stars reacted to the goal as they pushed for equalizer and won a corner kick which Mathias Samuel headed over the bar.
Lobi Stars goalkeeper Aliko Mustapha went down with an injury in the 15th minute and was replaced by Atsaka Daniel who got his first league appearance.
Atsaka Daniel’s first task was to pick the ball out of his net. The goalkeeper allowed Chigozie Ihunda’s free kick slip from his hand and Nelson Esor slot home the rebound for Rivers United for the second goal.
The biggest first half opportunity for Lobi Stars came in 43rd minute when Sani Mohammed lifted a pass behind the defence of Rivers United to Austin Ogunye but shot straight at Goalkeeper Darlington Ovunda. Tiza Samuel regained the possession but his shot cleared off the line by Austin Festus.
Sunday Adetunji later made it 3-0 for Rivers United in the second half, shortly before he was substituted.
Lobi Stars attack got their consolation goal in the 87th after the referee punished Fabian Nworie for bringing down Tiza Samuel. Osimaga Duke stepped up and converted the kick to bring the socre to 3-1 in favour of Rivers United.
The result moved Rivers United to fourth position on the table, while Lobi Stars maintained their 8th place on the log.
