Revealed! Why Genk blocked Paul Onuachu’s Return

KRC Genk Sporting Director, Dimitri de Conde has revealed why Paul Onuachu didn’t return to the Club from Southampton.

In an interview with HLN, de Conde stated that Genk made a Club record bid for the striker, only for Southampton to change the dynamic of the deal in the last minute.

Both sides initial agreed a swap deal with Southampton wanting to include take Joseph Paintsil for an exchange for Onuachu.

The deal fell through when Southampton included Aziz Ouattara from their baby club Valenciennes in the deal, in order to reduce the price.

Genk was unhappy with the new demands, forcing De Conde to cancel deal, expressing concern about future consequences.

“If we had agreed to that, we would have been in trouble in two years. Not nice, because Paul wanted to come back. He didn’t sleep for three nights.”

Ultimately, Onuachu joined Trabzonspor on loan, aiming to revive his career after a goalless stint with Southampton.

He has scored four goals in seven league games in the Turkish Super Lig.

Before leaving Belgium for Southampton, Onuachu had scored 85 goals in 134 games for the Limburgers.
