In a tense encounter in Uyo, the Super Eagles of Nigeria secured a narrow 1-0 win over Libya to remain at the top of their group in the 2025 AFCON qualifiers.
Playing their third match in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, Nigeria dominated the game from start to finish, showcasing superior ball control and creating numerous scoring opportunities.
However, as it has been a recurring issue for the Super Eagles, their lack of clinical finishing left much to be desired.
Despite being the stronger side, the Super Eagles missed a series of clear-cut chances, with players like Alex Iwobi, William Troost-Ekong, and Ademola Lookman all guilty of spurning opportunities that could have put the game to bed much earlier.
Libya, on the other hand, appeared content with sitting deep and absorbing the pressure, clearly aiming for a draw.
The Mediterranean Knights adopted a highly defensive approach, often parking the bus to frustrate the Nigerian attack.
Nigeria’s wingers, Ademola Lookman and Moses Simon, initially started on opposite flanks, but coach Augustine Eguavoen made an early tactical switch, swapping their positions to try and break down Libya’s resolute defence.
Time-wasting tactics from the Libyan team, particularly their goalkeeper, further aggravated the Nigerian fans, who grew increasingly frustrated as the clock ticked on without a breakthrough.
The breakthrough finally came in the 86th minute, courtesy of substitute Fisayo Dele-Bashiru. After a flurry of missed chances, Dele-Bashiru scored with an assist from Moses Simon.
The stadium atmosphere shifted dramatically, with the fans erupting in chants and praise for the team.
Nigeria had 15 shots with 7 on target, while Libya managed just two shots with none troubling Nigerian goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali, who remained largely untested but was solid when called upon.
Ekong marshalled the defence expertly, delivering a commanding performance at the back.
Despite the missed chances, the 3 points were secured, and the win kept Nigeria firmly in control of their AFCON qualifying campaign.
Up next for the Super Eagles is the return leg in Libya, where they will aim to secure another win in what is expected to be a challenging environment.
