Plateau United won the battle on Saturday, but lost the war against Etoile du Sahel after they failed to overturn the first leg deficit suffered in their CAF Champions League first-round match.
Plateau United had lost 3-2 to Etoile in Tunisia and needed a 2-0 win or more to progress to the group stage of the Champions League, but Kennedy Boboye’s men could only breach the visitors once in 90 minutes.
Tosin Omoyele scored on 25 minutes in Kano, but that was all she wrote and the NPFL champions CAF CL fate was sealed.
Hence, like fellow NPFL side MFM FC, who lost to MC Alger 7-2 on aggregate, they’ll now try out for places in the CAF Confederation Cup (CAF CC).
They both will find out their play-off round opponents on March 21st.
Winners over two legs of this round will progress to the group stage of the competition.
Meanwhile, Enyimba and Akwa United compete in the CAF CC and have second-leg matches on Sunday.
The Elephants of Aba carry a 2-0 advantage into the second-leg tie in Calabar against Energie FC, while Akwa United need to over a 1-0 first-leg deficit against Al-Ittihad Tripoli.
