Peseiro Hits Back Over “Negative Football” Criticisms

Super Eagles head coach, Jose Peseiro says he won’t change his tactics to please the fans and media.

Despite parading some of the best attacking talents on the continent, Peseiro’s side is facing challenges finding back of the net at the ongoing 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire.

Peseiro has used 3-4-3 formation in Nigeria’s last two games against Cote d’Ivoire and Guinea-Bissau, ascoring only single digits in both games.

Since he adopted the formation, the team is yet to score from open play, and have just a penalty and own goal to show for it, and the Portuguese has come under criticism for it.

Reacting to the backlash, Peseiro insists he’ll only do what’s best for his team.

“I have the obligation to do what is right for my team, pick the best formation and how best we can win games,” he told reporters.

“The most important thing is for my players to believe in our strategy. They believe in what we are doing and have done well so far.

“If you remember at the last AFCON, Senegal didn’t score too many goals in the group stage.

“We are not scoring too many goals but we are winning. I prefer to continue like this and reach the final,” He concluded.

On Saturday Jose Peseiro’s side will face Cameroon for a place in the last eight of the AFCON.
