Former Super Eagles coach José Peseiro has congratulated Ademola Lookman on winning the prestigious 2024 CAF Men’s Player of the Year award.
Lookman was crowned Africa’s best player at the CAF Awards held on Monday night in Marrakech, Morocco, succeeding fellow Nigerian Victor Osimhen, who claimed the title in 2023.
The 27-year-old winger’s remarkable year included standout performances that helped Nigeria secure silver at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire.
Lookman scored three goals during the tournament, a key factor in the Super Eagles’ impressive run under Peseiro.
On the club front, Lookman etched his name into history by delivering a stunning hat-trick in the UEFA Europa League final, leading Atalanta to their first-ever European title and their second major trophy in 117 years.
In the 2023/24 season, Lookman was in sensational form, recording 17 goals and 10 assists in 45 games for Atalanta.
This season, he has continued his fine run, already netting 11 goals in 19 appearances as Atalanta competes at the top end of Serie A under Gian Piero Gasperini.
Peseiro, in his congratulatory message, emphasized the team’s collective role in Lookman’s success while applauding the forward’s individual brilliance.
“Congratulations @molalookman on winning the CAF Player of the Year 2024 award! A well-deserved recognition of your incredible talent and your significance to Nigeria and African football,” Peseiro wrote on X.
“It is also important to highlight the role of the Nigerian national team, whose collective efforts contributed to this individual award, as well as the remarkable achievement of a Super Eagle winning the award for the second consecutive year, following @victorosimhen9’s victory last year. Many congratulations!”
Lookman’s triumph marks Nigeria’s second successive CAF Player of the Year win, further solidifying the Super Eagles’ growing presence on the continental stage.
