The head coach of Nigeria’s female wrestling team, Purity Akuh has expressed satisfaction with the performance of his wrestlers at the Spanish Grand Prix.
Nigeria secured two bronze medals at the event which held in Madrid, and serves as a pre-Olympic tournament.
Esther Kolawole (62kg) and Ogunsanya Christinah (53kg) both clinched bronze medals in the semi-finals.
However, it was a mixed bag of results for the team, where three-time Commonwealth champion Odunayo Adekuoroye lost to Norway’s Othile Hole in the quarter-finals.
Similarly, African champion Hannah Reuben suffered an early exit after losing her first bout.
Despite these setbacks, Coach Akuh remains optimistic, and satisfied with his athletes’ efforts as they prepare for the Paris Olympic Games.
“It was a good outing for our girls in the sense that it offered us the opportunity to look at areas we needed to improve on,” said the Coach.
“It also gave the wrestlers the avenue to wrestle competitively, although not as if it were to be in Paris, but it was great, and we have known areas we need to improve upon.”
The Nigerian Team will continue their final training camp in Germany ahead of the Olympic Games in Paris, France.
