Paris 2024: Super Falcons Must Dig In Against World Champions Spain

The die is cast and Nigeria faces the highroad of elimination from the Paris Olympic Games Women’s Football Event.

A defeat to Spain, on Sunday, will almost certainly send Randy Waldrum and the Super Falcons parking, and it is hard to see any other likelihood – it is bleak.

In their opening game, the Falcons lost 1-0 to Brazil’s As Canarinhas; and at that point their fate was sealed.

For Waldrum it’ll take some tactical ingenuity to keep Spain at bay, but even more to hit a decisive blow and cause a major upset in the Women’s game.

Nigeria has only recorded one win from their previous 10 Olympic matches and they’ve never won against a European opponent.

Against the current World Champions, the odds are steep, Nigeria will need a miracle. Though the team has shown it can defend gallantly, where they seem to lack coordination is in the attacking third.

Despite the quality of his attacking options, the team has managed to score only two goals in their last five competitive matches.

Against Brazil, Waldrum started Uchenna Kanu, Ifeoma Onumonu and Asisat Oshoala on the bench – though Kanu and Onumonu would later get minutes – the outcome however proves the problem persists.

So, the big question is which Super Falcons team will show up at the Stade de la Beaujoire in Nantes later tonight?

Hopefully, the Ladies will play, and do so for the names on the back and front of their shirts; to leave everything on the field.
