Nigerian boxer Cynthia Ogunsemilore has been disqualified from the Paris Olympics women’s tournament after testing positive for a banned substance.
The International Testing Agency (ITA) on Saturday, July 28, announced that the 22-year-old lightweight champion tested positive for furosemide, a diuretic often used to mask other performance-enhancing drugs.
A sample collected on Thursday, July 25 confirmed the presence of the banned substance.
According to the ITA, “The athlete has been informed of the case and has been provisionally suspended until the resolution of the matter in line with the World Anti-Doping Code and the IOC Anti-Doping Rules applicable to the Olympic Games Paris 2024.”
Cynthia Ogunsemilore and Abdul-Afeez Osoba are the only two boxers representing Nigeria in the Boxing section.
With Cynthia banned, only Abdul-Afeez will be left to participate in the men boxing.
