“Our Lives and Careers Depended on It” – Ogunmodede on CHAN Eagles’ Triumph

Super Eagles B interim coach, Daniel Ogunmodede, has highlighted the challenges faced by home-based coaches and players in Nigeria, emphasizing their lack of access to basic facilities despite their efforts to excel.

Speaking during the post-match press conference after Nigeria’s emphatic 3-1 victory over Ghana, Ogunmodede called for patience and support from fans.

The CHAN Eagles defeated the Black Galaxies on a 3-1 aggregate, following a goalless draw in Accra last weekend.

Three first-half goals from Sodiq Ismail, Junior Nduka, and Saviour Isaac sealed Nigeria’s place in next year’s tournament.

Reflecting on the team’s performance and the broader challenges they face, Ogunmodede said:

“The boys showed character. This win was vital for the coaches, players, and the incoming generation because our lives and careers depended on it.

“As coaches and players in this country, we are not exposed to the basic facilities needed for growth, but we are doing our best to live up to the standards of our fellow coaches and players abroad.

I hope people will be patient with us so we can also excel and make a difference in the game.”

Nigeria’s qualification ends a six-year absence from the CHAN tournament, with their last appearance in 2018 ending as runners-up.

The team will now turn their attention to preparing for the tournament, which will be co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania in 2025.
