Osimhen Should Have Left Napoli Last Season –  Ejiofor

Former Nigerian international Eric Ejiofor has weighed in on the ongoing transfer saga surrounding Super Eagles forward Victor Osimhen.

Osimhen is set to leave Napoli, yet the anticipated transfer has hit a snag.

Since the opening of the transfer window, which is nearly closing, no deal has materialized, with many clubs backing away due to Napoli’s steep asking price.

It’s evident that the African Footballer of the Year wants to leave.

Even Napoli’s coach, Antoine Conte, doesn’t have Osimhen in his plans. However, clubs are hesitant to meet the hefty fee Napoli demands.

Interest had come from Saudi Arabian clubs, PSG, Arsenal, and Chelsea, but they’ve all backed out.

Chelsea, despite fluctuating interest, remains the front-runner for his signature.

Speaking on Brila FM’s “No Holds Barred” with Ifeanyi Udeze, Ejiofor discussed the situation candidly, suggesting that Osimhen should have left Napoli when his value was at its peak.

“That year when Napoli won the league and his contract was about to expire, he should have made the move,” Ejiofor stated. “Now he doesn’t have a choice; he needs to move.

“He’s looking to join Chelsea, but the delay is problematic. He needs to settle in and focus on the season, yet negotiations are dragging due to the exorbitant price.”

“I pray that Chelsea favors him, because aside from Chelsea, there’s no other club. Victor Osimhen is a good player who fights and hustles for the ball, so I believe he can help Chelsea.

That’s why I feel they should have sorted out the deal by now so he can start adjusting to their style.”

Current Transfer Deal

Presently, Chelsea is the sole serious contender for Osimhen, but they are reluctant to meet Napoli’s substantial asking price.

Chelsea is expected to hold more talks regarding Osimhen in the next few days but has other targets according to reports.

Osimhen is clearly Chelsea’s top target, but they are only interested in a loan deal at this stage, which neither the player nor Napoli seems keen on. Additionally, the Nigerian isn’t prepared to reduce his salary demands.

With 76 goals in 133 appearances for Napoli, including 26 goals in 32 league games during the 2022/2023 season, Osimhen has proven his value. His impressive performance was crucial to Napoli’s title win.

As Napoli finalizes an agreement with Romelu Lukaku, the focus can now shift entirely to negotiating Osimhen’s potential transfer.

Why Chelsea Needs Osimhen

Despite heavy investment this summer, the Blues are still looking to bring in a proven goal scorer, with many believing that’s the one position needing reinforcement.

The club has already signed Marc Guiu from Barcelona, and despite the teenager showing promise, they are looking for more competition for Nicolas Jackson.

With ambitions to return to their glory days, Chelsea cannot rely solely on Jackson.

The striker market isn’t the best, and Chelsea saw a move for Samu Omorodion collapse earlier this month.

Osimhen stands out as a top target, and with the clock ticking, a resolution seems imminent. However, the absence of Champions League football and potential salary demands pose significant obstacles for Chelsea.
