Victor Osimhen kicked off 2025 in style, finding the back of the net in Galatasaray’s 2-1 victory over Göztepe, a win that solidified their position at the summit of the Turkish Super Lig.
The Super Eagles striker opened the scoring in the 10th minute, confidently converting a penalty after Djalma Silva’s rash challenge prompted referee Alper Akarsu to award the spot-kick.
However, Göztepe leveled the game through Nigerian midfielder Anthony Dennis, who set up Romulo for a clinical finish inside Galatasaray’s penalty area.
Osimhen nearly restored the hosts’ lead in first-half stoppage time, but his shot sailed just wide of the left post.
In the 61st minute, Dries Mertens put Galatasaray back in front, drilling a low shot into the bottom left corner after a well-timed pass from Yunus Akgün.
Lucas Torreira appeared to have added a third goal for the Lions in the 80th minute, but VAR ruled his effort offside, keeping the scoreline narrow.
Osimhen was substituted in the 87th minute, with Michy Batshuayi coming on in his place.
With his goal against Göztepe, Osimhen has now registered 12 goals and 5 assists in 15 appearances across all competitions this season.
Galatasaray are now 11 points clear of their closest rivals, Fenerbahçe, who still have a game in hand as the title race heats up.
